Your Fuse FAQs, Answered

Choosing the right fuse for your application is vital. A fuse is a protective device so if it’s not selected with care, the level of protection that your circuit will experience may be compromised. When your machine/circuit was designed, the designer carefully considered the level of protection that was required, so getting it wrong may have serious consequences.

What Are Fuses Used For?

Fuses serve two main purposes:

1. To protect components and equipment from costly damage caused by overcurrents.

2. To isolate sub-systems from the main system once a fault has occurred.

Also, please refer to ‘Can I replace a fuse with a circuit breaker?’ in this section.

What Are Overcurrents?

Overcurrents occur when a circuit’s normal load is exceeded, and they can be either overloads or short circuits. Overloads happen when current exceeds the normal load, while short circuits cause a drastic increase in current, bypassing the load. Both can damage equipment, but if not interrupted, short circuits can cause catastrophic damage.

Identifying & Replacing a Blown Fuse

When replacing a blown fuse, ensure you use the same or equivalent fuse. The fuse should match the same utilization category and electrical performance as the original. Fuseco provides cross-reference charts for assistance.

Selecting a Fuse for New Applications

Consider factors like short circuit current, voltage rating (AC/DC), full load current, component characteristics, in-rush conditions (e.g., motor startup), space, ambient conditions, standards, and fuse holder suitability.

Voltage Rating

The fuse’s voltage rating must be equal to or higher than the circuit voltage. It’s crucial when the fuse is interrupting the current to prevent arc re-strike.

AC vs. DC Fuses

AC fuses are designed to handle alternating current, where the voltage and current change direction periodically. DC fuses must break a continuous, steady current, requiring a longer arc suppression design to prevent sustained arcing.

Current Rating

The fuse’s current rating must exceed the circuit’s normal operating current. Contact Fuseco for advice on the appropriate rating.

Breaking Capacity (HRC)

The breaking capacity is the maximum current a fuse can safely interrupt. It must be greater than the potential short circuit current of the circuit.

Standards & Approvals

Fuses must comply with the relevant standards for your region (IEC for Europe/Asia, UL for North America). Ensure replacement fuses meet the same standard as the original to maintain safety and compliance.

Understanding Fuse Utilization Categories

Fuses protect components from overcurrents, but not all are the same. The IEC's "Utilization Categories" help determine the right fuse for your application. For example, semiconductor fuses open quickly to protect sensitive devices, while motor protection fuses tolerate high inrush currents during start-up. Choosing the wrong fuse can cause damage or unnecessary downtime. Fuseco can guide you in selecting the right fuse for your needs.

Main Fuse Groups

  • Sub-miniature and SMD fuses
  • Miniature fuses
  • Cartridge fuses
  • British Standard fuses
  • DIN NH Blade fuses
  • Automotive & DC fuses
  • European Standard & Bottle Fuses
  • American Standard fuses
  • PV fuses
  • BESS fuses
  • Medium Voltage fuses

What is I²t?

I²t measures the energy needed to open a fuse and is critical for semiconductor protection. It reflects the energy a fuse lets through during an overcurrent event and is essential for preventing damage to sensitive components.

Choosing a Semiconductor Fuse

When selecting a semiconductor fuse, focus on the I²t value, which ensures minimal energy exposure to sensitive components. For replacements, select a fuse with an I²t within ±10% of the original fuse. For new applications, ensure the fuse’s I²t is lower than the components being protected.

Semiconductor Fuse Placement

Semiconductor fuses generate more heat than other types and should not be enclosed in fuse holders without proper cooling. Ensure the fuse holder’s heat tolerance exceeds the fuse’s power loss to prevent damage.

Replacing a Semiconductor Fuse

Never replace a semiconductor fuse with a standard gG fuse, as this could lead to critical damage to your components.

Fuses vs. Circuit Breakers

While circuit breakers are resettable and cost-effective for downstream protection, fuses are essential upstream for safety, fault isolation, and component protection. Fuses cannot be replaced by circuit breakers in critical upstream roles.
