A Brisbane contractor was asked by their client to investigate ways to reduce the cost of their electricity expenditure. The building is a typical multi-storey commercial building on Tank Street which houses three government departments. The contractor teamed up with Fuseco and the results were impressive.

A Brisbane contractor was asked by their client to investigate ways to reduce the cost of their electricity expenditure. The building is a typical multi-storey commercial building on Tank Street which houses three government departments. The contractor teamed up with Fuseco and the results were impressive.

THE PROBLEM

The client and the tenants of the building wanted a professional investigation into possible technologies that may achieve a reduction in the increasing cost of electricity for the building. 


After reviewing the previous 12 months Energex NMI power usage data and assessing the electrical load, a recommendation was made to install a 300kVAr Sinexcel Static Var Generator (SVG) inverter-based power factor correction system.  This would improve the average power factor from 0.83 to 0.99 and that savings in the region of $17k/annum should be achieved.

  • No capacitor banks therefore no maintenance costs & performance issues associated with capacitors. 
  • Excellent power factor correction performance - Can maintain a PF of 0.99 lagging or unity if required.
  • Dynamic Step-Less Compensation - Profiles the load and operates with a response speed of <15ms. No possibility of over or under compensation, will only inject the kVAr that is needed in that moment.
  • Corrects load imbalance
  • Compensates both inductive and capacitive loads - corrects lagging and leading power factor.

THE SOLUTION

The SVG was recommended instead of a traditional capacitor-based PFC system due to the SVG’s dynamic (< 15ms) assessment and correction on each phase, being immune to existing system harmonics and its ability to correct the building phase imbalances.  The SVG also supplies infinitely variable reactive compensation current without using steps of capacitors connected via contactors.

THE OUTCOME

The unit was installed and commissioned in December 2017 and as can be seen from the screenshot, the SVG is now maintaining a power factor of 0.99, has lowered and balanced the grid currents by up to 80 amps.  The customer is well on the way to achieving the projected savings.

From the moment the AHF and SVG units were turned on our power factor issues were a thing of the past. At both sites our PF is now 0.99 on all phases all the time, the units react instantaneously to our fluctuating load and power factor and the result has been an excellent return on investment.
